What is the Ontario G1 Test?
Once you turn 16, you can visit a DriveTest Centre to take the Ontario G1 written knowledge test. The test includes 40 multiple-choice questions, divided into two sections:
- Road Signs: 20 questions
- Rules of the Road: 20 questions
To pass, you must correctly answer at least 16 questions in each section. Along with the written test, you'll need to pass a vision test and pay a $159.75 fee, which covers your G1 knowledge test, future G2 road test, and your 5-year license. If you don’t pass the G1 written test, you can retake it for an additional $16.00.

How Long Does It Take to Get Your G2 License?
Ontario uses a Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) system, which takes about 2 years to complete. After passing your G1 test, you must hold your G1 license for 1 year (or 8 months with driver training) before qualifying for your first road test to get your G2 license. The Class G2 road test costs $53.75.
With a G1 license, you can practice driving, but only with a fully licensed driver in the passenger seat.
