What to Expect on the Ontario G1 Knowledge Test
Once you turn 16, you can visit a DriveTest centre in Ontario to take the G1 written exam. The test has 40 multiple-choice questions, divided into two parts:
- 20 questions on road signs
- 20 questions on rules of the road
To pass, you’ll need at least 16 correct answers in each section, for a minimum overall score of 80%. Along with the written knowledge test, you’ll also take a vision test and pay the $159.75 Class G1 licence package fee, which includes the knowledge test, a Class G2 road test, and a five-year driver’s licence. Retakes of the knowledge test cost $16.00.
The Graduated Driver’s Licence (GDL) Program
Ontario uses a Graduated Driver’s Licence system (GDL) that takes about two years to complete. After passing the G1 exam, you must hold your G1 licence for 12 months before attempting the G2 road test. If you’re enrolled in a government-approved driver training program, you may attempt the G2 after just 8 months. With a G1 licence, you can practice driving only when supervised by a fully licensed driver with at least four years of experience.
