How Many Questions Are on the G1 Test?

The official G1 test consists of two parts:

  • Rules of the Road – Questions related to road signs, traffic laws, and rules for safe driving.
  • Road Signs – Questions about common traffic signs and their meanings.

There are 40 total questions on the test, with 20 questions in each section. You’ll need to answer 16 out of 20 questions correctly in the Rules of the Road section and 16 out of 20 questions correctly in the Road Signs section to pass.

How Many Mistakes to Pass the G1 Test?

To pass the G1 test, you can make no more than 4 mistakes in the Rules of the Road section and 4 mistakes in the Road Signs section.

How Much Does It Cost to Get Your G1 in Ontario?

The cost of taking the G1 knowledge test in Ontario is as follows:

  • Class G1 Licence Package (includes the knowledge test, Class G2 road test, and a five-year licence): $159.75
  • Knowledge Test (per extra attempt): $16.00
  • Class G2 Road Test (to earn a Class G2 licence): $53.75
  • Five-Year Licence: $90.00
  • Class G Road Test (to earn a Class G licence): $91.25
  • Licence Exchanges (for drivers from jurisdictions with reciprocal exchange agreements): $90.00
  • Foreign Licence Applications (for drivers from jurisdictions without exchange agreements, includes a five-year licence and knowledge test): $106.00 + any applicable road test fees
  • Official MTO Driver's Handbook: $18.00 (Cash only)

Can I Take My Ontario G1 Test Online?

No, the G1 test must be taken in person at a DriveTest Centre. Online testing is not available.

G1 License Details

Once you pass the G1 test, you will receive your G1 license, which allows you to drive with certain restrictions. After holding your G1 for 12 months (or 8 months with a Driver Education course), you can take the G2 road test to progress to the next stage of your driving journey.

How to Book Your G1 Test

You can take the G1 knowledge test at a DriveTest Centre. No appointment is required; however, there may be a wait depending on how busy the location is. It’s recommended to go early or check wait times in advance.

What Documents Do I Need for the G1 Test?

When you go to take the G1 test, make sure you bring the following documents:

  • Proof of identity (e.g., passport, birth certificate, or valid Ontario photo card)
  • Proof of residency (e.g., utility bill, bank statement)
  • Your Health Card is NOT a valid ID for this test.

Can You Skip Questions on the G1 Test?

No, you cannot skip questions during the G1 test. You must answer every question to proceed.
